Kijk ze daar stralend staan op hun trouwdag: Václav en Ivana Strnad, twee jonge architectuurstudenten die popelen om samen een leven op te bouwen. Helena Třeštíková volgde ze voor haar televisieserie Marriage Stories en dat bleef ze in de jaren erna doen, maar liefst 35 jaar lang. Het echtpaar voedt vijf kinderen op, een ongewoon aantal in socialistisch Tsjechië, en begint na de val van het communisme een eigen onderneming in Praag. Een getrouwd leven ontvouwt zich, met alle ups en downs. Een van de kinderen dreigt te ontsporen, Ivana kampt met depressies en de meubelzaak loopt steeds slechter. Maar de Strnads houden vol, totdat een diepe echtelijke crisis het verbond dat Václav en Ivana decennia daarvoor sloten alsnog op haar grondvesten doet schudden en Václav zich vertwijfeld afvraagt waar hij nu al die jaren zo hard voor heeft gewerkt. A selection of the two best Marriage Stories diluted by the last act, which fully shows that Třeštíková's method is currently completely toothless and random. Where in the 1980s she was sharply able to capture the ordinariness of normalization and in the 1990s the tenacious effort to "survive her family and entrepreneurship", in the last third she introduces sparse speech therapy, a random collection of moments and increasingly self-serving intrusions into the private relationships of several people. Unease and helplessness are actually quite mild terms. A better word is impotence. It's a pity, I consider The Strnads to be the pinnacle of Marriage Stories, but their feature form does not come close to the penetration of two television documentaries.

The relatively exceptional and unconventional life of one family, which is brilliantly captured over a period of time. You get everything In this documentary – family, love, relationship crises, educational crises, separation, several weddings, a happy ending. The Strnads have a unique family charm that is a joy to watch. At the same time, their life development and diligence will hopefully bring them great satisfaction. I am glad that they shared their story with the public and I also compliment Helena Třeštíková, who once again proved the quality of her on-going work.
