Having survived a heart attack, landlord Kerekházy Ferdinánd calls back home his son Kerek Ferkó from abroad, who, to the great astonishment of his conservative father, sends home a waggonload of machinery to use them in installing an irrigation system on the salty, infertile land and turn them into rich soil. The old count is not willing to listen to the plans of his son and he would prefer him to marry baroness Zólyomi. Since he is not inclined to do so, he disowns him. With the help of the mayor and the support of a young engineer from Pest the irrigation scheme can be realized after all. When the old count, who keeps on dreaming about grandchildren, notices that his son and the daughter of the mayor fell in love with each other, he makes peace with his son and proposes to the girl in the name of his son.
