Amidst the picturesque mountainscape of Hungary is a place called Boldogszer. It's home for a family of seven whose way of life is more akin to the 18th rather than the 21st century. Istvan and Reka and their children are cut off from the rest of the world and lack all modern comforts. The children play on meadows and in the woods just like storybooks intended. Life takes its beat from nature and the changing of the seasons. Their way of life is based on Hungarian folklore, which the parents teach their children through stories and song. Daily chores include archery, fencing and climbing trees. The children's antics are filled with novelty and insight, life's little troubles notwithstanding. All the while they learn to live in unison with nature and its fauna. The stories of mom and dad's adventures to city discos and pizzerias sound like they've happened in a past life. Once Upon a Time in Hungary enchants with its wondrous sense of moments both transcendent and mundane.
