Mathematics is everywhere. We use it every day, whenever we count something or in the form of the complex technology and software which allows, for example, our cell phones to work. Despite its versatility, many people have a negative attitude towards it. Scientists and university professors who see in maths not merely boring and complex equations but also its funny and useful side, address precisely this problem. They remember their first experience with counting and realise that maths is actually fascinating and entertaining for children until they began to learn it at school. According to Professor Sara Santos, maths is a fundamental skill allowing for that abstract thinking without which we could not have evolved into what we are at present. Nevertheless, at school, many ask what a quadratic equation is good for in day-to-day life. Scientists try to find a way to demonstrate that maths can be interesting and necessary for progress, pointing out that it is the wrong teaching methods at schools which are responsible for the aversion to it.
