The image of the American flag flying high on Iwo Jima is a defining image of World War II. The film of that event was taken by Bill Genaust. And, nine days later he was killed, his body entombed on the island to this day. He would never know the impact his film footage would have on the world.
Through his Photo Unit commander on Iwo Jima, never-before published photos and artefacts, and through the last living relative who remembers this gentle soldier, the film sees the war through his eyes in the forceful, visceral footage he filmed of two of the fiercest battles in World War II.
Although Bill Genaust's life ended on that island and his body has never been recovered, his legacy lives on in the images he filmed: the bloody battles of a world at war, the poignant faces of men poised for war, and those who would not return. (officiële tekst van distribiteur)
