In een onderzoekslaboratorium wordt een gevangenis gebouwd waarin 20 mannen worden geplaatst om gevangenen en bewakers te spelen. De gevangenen worden opgesloten en moeten een aantal regels opvolgen; de bewaarders moeten de orde handhaven zonder geweld te gebruiken. Iedereen is vrij om te stoppen wanneer ze willen, maar als ze dat doen, geven ze wel hun loon op. In het begin is de stemming tussen de twee groepen jolig en ontspannen. Maar langzaam aan ontstaat er ruzie, en gaan de bewakers over tot drastische straffen om hun overwicht te bewaren. (Independent Films)

It really depends on the viewer's attitude, since The Experiment can easily stand as an entertaining genre film with a lighter sociological slant, but certainly not a study of the behavior of a sample of the population in extreme conditions, however much anyone may patronize it. Even from the position of a classic narrative film, it does have its share of holes (the script in particular reeks of the author having lost his virginity at the time of writing), but on the other hand, the surprisingly good story editing manages to keep the entire two hours of action in two rooms in front of the screen. Which is actually quite rare.

The psychology doesn’t work too well for director Hirschbiegel in the first three quarters of The Experiment, but he demonstrates his skill with the action in the last quarter. This is an OK thriller, but it’s outshined by Shallow Grave and even Cube.
