De flamboyante Dalton Trumbo was in 1947 een van de best betaalde scenaristen van zijn tijd. Als voorstander van vakbonden, loongelijkheid en burgerrechten werd hij gearresteerd voor communistische activiteit en belandde hij op de zwarte lijst. In de jaren die volgden verloor Trumbo zijn baan, zijn huis en zijn vrienden. Hij gaf echter niet op en bleef onder een pseudoniem scenario’s schrijven, waarvoor hij ondanks alles twee Oscars wist te bemachtigen. Trumbo klaagde de absurditeit en onrechtvaardigheid van de zwarte lijst aan, die een negatieve invloed had op de levens en carrières van uiteenlopende figuren in Hollywood. Acteur Kirk Douglas en regisseur Otto Preminger erkenden in 1960 Trumbo als scenarist van hun blockbusters Spartacus en Exodus en brachten daarmee een einde aan het tijdperk van de zwarte lijst.
