Tijdens een bemande Mars-missie worden astronaut Mark Watney en zijn teamleden overvallen door een hevige storm. Zijn teamleden denken dat Watney het niet heeft overleefd en laten hem achter op de onherbergzame en barre planet. Maar Watney is niet dood en moet met beperkte voorzieningen al zijn vindingrijkheid en intelligentie aanwenden om de vluchtleiding op aarde te laten weten dat hij nog in leven is. Op een afstand van miljoenen kilometers werkt een team van NASA-medewerkers en wetenschappers koortsachtig aan het terughalen van The Martian en ook zijn teamleden stellen alles in het werk om Watney met een risicovolle en vrijwel onmogelijke actie te redden. Ondertussen leeft de rest van de wereld intens mee met de heroïsche reddingsoperatie. (20th Century Fox)
