Twee families in Brazilië hebben generaties lang een vete over een stuk grond dat ze beide claimen. Tonho staat op het punt zijn familie te wreken wat natuurlijk ook door de andere familie zal worden beantwoord. The camerawork is definitely charming. The only problem is that the camera basically showed pictures of people’s lives in Brazil in the early 20th century and completely shoved away the story that tried to get to the surface ... but in vain.

This film simply got to me with its camera work and atmosphere that resonated with me for a long time. It's a very slow film with minimal dialogue, where the story speaks through images of a landscape scorched by the sun, details capturing sweat on human faces, or emotions emanating from the characters' eyes. This is my second encounter with Walter Salles after his famous Central Station. This guy really knows how to craft a film. Overall impression: 95%. A tragic film about the inability to break free from senseless traditions and blind obedience to the patriarch of one's family.

A visually striking film about family togetherness and a blood feud from exotic Brazil that dragged on a bit too long for my taste. The obvious emotional message just didn't come through for me. I can't help but feel that it was a bit too much like a soap opera...
