New York, de jaren 20. Max Perkins, boekenredacteur bij uitgeverij Scribners Sons, heeft grote auteurs als Ernest Hemingway en F. Scott Fitzgerald onder zijn hoede. Wanneer een chaotisch duizend pagina-tellend manuscript van de nog onbekende schrijver Thomas Wolfe op zijn bureau beland, is Max ervan overtuigd dat hij een nieuw literair genie heeft ontdekt. De twee mannen beginnen het boek te bewerken tot een versie die geschikt is voor publicatie, maar een lange strijd om letterlijk elke zin volgt. Tijdens dit lange proces wordt de relatie tussen de zachtaardige familieman Perkins en de excentrieke auteur steeds hechter, iets wat hun echtgenotes met lede ogen aanzien. The fates presented in the movie Genius aren't uninteresting at all, but despite the excellent cast, the film lacks enough to make it truly exceptional. The glimpses of the Hemingway and Fitzgerald characters are merely a nod to the audience; their significance isn't particularly substantial for the presented story.

A superb drama from a literary milieu. Editor Maxwell Perkins is responsible for such greats as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, and now faces a new challenge in the form of Thomas Wolfe's magnificent novel. This eventually became Look Homeward, Angel, and its loose sequel Of Time and the River. It's a great meeting of acting concerts over spirit-lifting substance. The likable Colin Firth at a crossroads, Kidman (different and wonderful again, this time as the emotionally-tested lover of a selfish literary artist), and of course the unhinged wildcat Jude Law.
