Engels A jewel that Czech Television unfortunately guards closely and pulls out of the archive once in a blue moon... Actually, even less. For example, today is the 100th anniversary of Rafael Kubelík's birth, and we didn't find the concert in the program. Oh well. At least it's (split into parts) on YouTube, right? The recording gives off an incredibly strong atmosphere and the conductor's sheer joy and emotion. The director intersperses the shots of him, the three orchestras in one, and the Old Town Square filled to capacity with grateful views of Prague, all beautifully complementing Smetana's masterpiece until one's breath is taken away. I especially love the moment in the Vltava River when the Prague Astronomical Clock begins to strike in the silence between the wedding polka and the roar of the forest fairies. ()
