Los Angeles. Lou Bloom is een gedreven jongeman die wanhopig op zoek is naar een baan. Hij ontdekt de snelle wereld van misdaadverslaggeving in de Amerikaanse miljoenenstad en worstelt zich al snel tussen de die-hard freelance journalisten die auto-ongelukken, branden, moorden en andere chaotische toestanden filmen voor de vele nieuwsstations in de stad. Als 'nightcrawler', iemand die de politieradio continu in de gaten houdt en hoopt op slachtoffers, doet Lou er alles aan om snel geld te verdienen. Zijn materiaal slaat aan bij tv-veteraan Nina, maar tijdens zijn zoektocht naar nieuws vervaagt de grens tussen toeschouwer en deelnemer en wordt Lou al snel de ster van zijn eigen verhaal.
