Wanneer Ian op zesjarige leeftijd zijn vader verliest, wordt hij voor het eerst geconfronteerd met de dood. Bang voor het leven en gegrepen door het overlijden van zijn vader, begint Ian zich af te zonderen. Zijn leven krijgt een nieuwe wending wanneer zijn moeder plotseling overlijdt. Ian is nu op zichzelf aangewezen. Dankzij het ‘Book of Life’, geschreven door zijn moeder, komt hij tot het inzicht dat hij zijn leven zin kan geven door van anderen te houden. Dan ontmoet hij Naomi, een getormenteerde vrouw. Er ontstaat een vriendschap die ook zijn eigen redding blijkt te zijn. Stukje bij beetje leert Ian van het leven en de levenden te houden. I didn’t find it endlessly depressing or incredibly sad. Ian simply wasn’t lucky to get the life he wanted and the understanding of other people. Which I understand. I also had some understanding for him for a while. But after that while, however, I tried to get closer to him because I found out he’s not such a bad person. But that changes nothing about the fact that he has been through some hardships that the others would barely be able to handle… and if so, then probably only with some lasting consequences. Love Eternal is based on a pretty strange, borderline bleak idea. You could spend hours thinking about it and contemplating the topic of death. So, I guess it’s not for everybody. But there’s no denying the movie has some filmmaking qualities and it’s great that this premise was handled by Irish cinematographers as the story is a great fit for Ireland. All in all, Ireland once again confirmed to me that they barely have a match in Europe.
