De Boxtrollen zijn slimme lieve wezens die onder de grond leven in een bijzondere magische wereld. Ze hebben hun omgeving gecreëerd uit gerecyclede materialen en hun kleding bestaat uit kartonnen dozen. Alle bewoners uit de stad boven de grond zijn onterecht bang voor de Boxtrollen vanwege een oude legende. De Boxtrollen hebben een weesjongetje uit de stad geadopteerd, Eggs, voor wie ze heel goed zorgen. Hij groeit bij hen op en leeft ook onder de grond. Wanneer de Boxtrollen bedreigd worden, gaat Eggs op zoek naar hulp uit de stad. Hij overwint zijn angsten en legt contact met het vriendelijke meisje Winnie, zij helpt hem om zijn vriendjes te redden. Samen brengen ze de twee werelden van de mensen bovengronds en de Boxtrollen ondergronds, een beetje dichter bij elkaar. (Universal Pictures International Netherlands)

The Boxtrolls reminded me of Tim Burton's stop-motion animated films or Coraline in its appeal, but compared to them, it loses in the story and, in fact, the visuals. The main villain really had charisma and I found the Boxtrolls likeable, but I was also a bit annoyed by the little girl with her father and the members of the cheese club. All in all, a mediocre film that impresses mostly by the way it looks, but doesn't leave much more in the viewer's mind (at least in mine).

The first minute of the animation didn't really captivate me, after all, stop motion puppet animation is not something that is so common nowadays. I am even more glad for it. Especially when it comes to a good story. This one is fantastic, imaginative, self-sufficient, and meaningful. It has emotions, great characters, and a packed plot. I was thrilled and enjoyed the movie.
