The Disciple speelt zich af op een afgelegen eiland in de Baltische Zee in de zomer van 1939. Karl, een dertienjarig weeskind, komt naar het eiland om als assistent van vuurtorenwachter Master Hasselbond werken. Hasselbond weigert Karl aan te nemen vanwege zijn jonge leeftijd, maar de jongen vecht om te blijven. Karl en Hasselbond’s onderdrukte zoon Gustaf worden vrienden, maar hun vriendschap verandert in rivaliteit en haat als Hasselbond Karl de voorkeur geeft boven zijn eigen zoon. Langzaam wordt duidelijk dat het eiland en de vuurtoren een soort tirannieke en sadistische gevangenis vormen. De film is stijlvol geschoten en voorzien van een beklijvende originele soundtrack (gemaakt door de man van de regisseusse). Een huiveringwekkende psychologische thriller, met een schrijnend en volledig absorberend onderwerp. (Noordelijk Film Festival)

While it stinks of Haneke as its conductor, thanks in particular the isolated family terror using minimalist means (except for a beautiful scene of a flaming piano), the problem with the film is that it maneuvers on its battlefield with a completely uninventive war tactic that only a slightly more progressive general would immediately see through and successfully counter. Unfortunately, the handling of character archetypes here is so transparent as to be comparable, for example, to a viewer with a lack of higher cinematic education comparing every unpleasant isolationist film to an overcooked Haneke.

If you want to visit a small, isolated lighthouse island where there is no shelter from a tyrannical dad and take a look into the cruel Nordic fates of his wife and children, The Disciple will deliver. Although the story is not original, it is well told and the atmosphere of the island is compelling.
