Als Elise en Didier elkaar ontmoeten is het liefde op het eerste gezicht. Ze zijn echter totaal verschillend. Zij heeft haar eigen tattooshop, hij speelt banjo in een band. Hij praat, zij luistert. Hij is overtuigd atheïst en tegelijkertijd een naïeve romanticus. Zij is de nuchterheid zelve. Wanneer dochter Maybelle geboren wordt, is hun geluk compleet. Maar het lot slaat toe als Maybelle ernstig ziek wordt.
