Als Elise en Didier elkaar ontmoeten is het liefde op het eerste gezicht. Ze zijn echter totaal verschillend. Zij heeft haar eigen tattooshop, hij speelt banjo in een band. Hij praat, zij luistert. Hij is overtuigd atheïst en tegelijkertijd een naïeve romanticus. Zij is de nuchterheid zelve. Wanneer dochter Maybelle geboren wordt, is hun geluk compleet. Maar het lot slaat toe als Maybelle ernstig ziek wordt. Kan een relatie dit gevecht doorstaan als twee personen zo van elkaar verschillen of laat de liefde je op het belangrijkste moment dan toch in de steek? The Broken Circle Breakdown is een intens liefdesverhaal, vol passie en muziek. Over hoe liefde het noodlot overwint en soms ook niet. (September Film)

I have to admit one thing. I would never have thought that the Belgians of all people would make a movie about a folk-music nutjob. He’s this long-haired and bearded tramp who lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere with all the animals in the world. It would have never occurred to me that a person like that could even live in Belgium. That kind of character does not really fit with that nation for me and what fits even less is the country music. For a story like that, I could imagine the Czech singers Michal Tučný, Wabi Daněk or maybe somebody from the United States. But Belgians? Having said that, I have to admit that this is a pretty brutal, uncompromising and at the same time well-made drama.
