Eleven-year-old Mariam lives in Palestine. Today is her late father's birthday and Miriam asks her mother for some money to buy a cake. Her mother reluctantly agrees, but when Mariam gets to the bakery she realises that she doesn't have enough money. Her attempts to find the rest of the cash mark the beginning of an adventurous odyssey that highlights the political tensions and the suffering brought about by life in such difficult circumstances.
