(A-Film Benelux)

Engels A nice indie rom-com about time travel that ends where other films about time travel begin. What’s funny is that, most of time, what’s worthy of praise is actually the opposite, that it begins where the others end. But not here. Like pretty much every other good indie flick, Safety Not Guaranteed relies on likeable characters, believable emotions and an original premise. ()

Engels I didn’t really get enthusiastic at all. The idea would be interesting, but the entire execution didn’t suit me at all. It’s such a weird combination of amateurism and a handheld camera that shakes and shakes and I don’t have the strength to see every minute of that. That would probably blow my brains out all the way to Mars. ()

Engels I simply like similar movies. It reminded me a lot of the film "Defendor", which I reviewed on Necronomicon, and also a bit of "Super", which are of a similar rank. Although it is necessary to mention one basic thing. The main character of the film "Safety Not Guaranteed" doesn't think he's a superhero and doesn't dress up as one. He just believes that he has to build a time machine to fulfill his mission. The similarity is rather with the film "Take Shelter", although "Safety Not Guaranteed" is more of a comedy, which couldn't be said about "Take Shelter". Darius and her two colleagues are journalists who are tasked with writing about a weirdo who placed an ad in the newspaper looking for someone to travel through time with, and it's not a joke. The journalists thought they would find an interesting story, especially about the life of a lunatic. The team leader, Jeff, returns to the place mainly for one woman with whom he had something in common in the past. The most work falls on the girl named Darius, who gets close to Kenneth to the point where she believes his words. It all sounds crazy, but for some reason, the man is charming to her. He gives her survival training, teams up with her on a mission when he needs to steal something, and she simply goes through all the adventures of his mission with him. The fact that Kenneth is telling the truth is confirmed to her by the fact that he is being followed by some agents. But then Darius finds out that some of the stories he told her are not true. Will Darius believe the madman who is building a time machine and whom she herself has not seen, or will she resist what she feels for him? The ending is wonderful and I really enjoyed it.
