La vida de los peces speelt zich af in real time tijdens een verjaardagsfeestje, waar de 33-jarige reisgidsenschrijver Andrés zijn laatste avond in Chili doorbrengt voordat hij weer naar zijn woonplaats Berlijn vertrekt. Na tien jaar afwezigheid was hij weer even terug in Chili. In elke kamer in het huis ontmoet hij de dierbaren van vroeger en komt hij oog in oog te staan met de ‘onvoltooid verleden tijd’. Net zo belangrijk als de rijke dialogen in La vida de los peces zijn de stiltes, de blikken en de gebaren. De camera zit dicht op de huid van Andrés, die zich steeds onthechter is gaan voelen. It’s amazing how the creators were able to turn this completely ordinary romantic plot into something that milked my emotions as hard as if I were a party to this love triangle. In its essence, this is a very simple story, but it still almost managed to stop my heartbeat toward the ending. It’s greatly executed and played, which is something I must really praise in case of a country that is mostly known for producing soap operas.

And you are not always capable of immediately understanding the significance of that turning point. Sometimes, the journey into the past and meeting with what could have represented your future can be quite painful - and perhaps it is better to avoid it. Very rarely can you switch to another train or at least change the switch without consequences for yourself or others. The Life of Fish is a melancholic, bitter encounter with the greatest love of your life when you realize that her children could have called you daddy. If you live a single life, which - let's admit it - simplifies and facilitates many things, you may not understand what true happiness consists of. Matías Bize managed to emotionally unsettle me quite a bit, and I will give him a fair four stars and an overall impression of 75% for that.
