Sleutelmaker A.J. Manglehorn leidt een bescheiden leven in een rustig dorp. Hij verzorgt zijn zieke kat, maakt elke vrijdag een praatje met de lokale bankbediende en gaat dagelijks naar hetzelfde restaurant. Terwijl hij routinematig zijn dag doorkomt, is hij ondertussen nog altijd bezig met het verlies van zijn grote liefde Clara. Tijdens zijn leven als crimineel stond zij vaak op de tweede plaats, een beslissing waar hij nog dagelijks spijt van heeft. Als hij op een dag Dawn ontmoet lijkt er eindelijk een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn leven te zijn aangebroken, maar Manglehorn zal eerst een beslissing moeten nemen. If you're not a fan of indie, the odyssey of Manglehorn will not be for you. A gloomy Al Pacino simply walks and stumbles through the whole movie, with the exception of occasional fits of anger, he goes on in his slow-paced minimalist style. And the longer he wallows in it, the more the film suits me, but it is not enough for more than a pleasant and unusual spectacle. It trivializes some problems too much and inflates a few little things disproportionately. Which is a shame in sensitive topic of loneliness in old age, when partners are gone, children are too grown up, and grandchildren are too far away.

It's a sad story, and in its finale, beautiful, but its execution is very ordinary. Yes, this is human life, and it can unfold like this, but without Al Pacino, who once again excels and showcases his greatness, it would be an easily forgettable film that you might overlook and not remember in the morning. I give a lot of credit for the acting, though.
