Laurel Hester is een zeer gewaardeerde rechercheur die al jaren met haar partner de straten van New Jersey drugsvrij probeert te houden. Haar privéleven komt tijdens werkuren nauwelijks ter sprake. Zo heeft ze zich nooit uitgesproken over haar seksuele voorkeur en weet niemand dat ze een serieuze relatie met de jongere Stacie heeft. Ze durft haar liefde voor Stacie pas openbaar te maken wanneer ze ontdekt dat ze terminaal ziek is. Ze heeft als laatste wens dat haar pensioenuitkering wordt uitbetaald aan de vrouw van haar leven, maar dat wordt door het politiekorps geweigerd. Met behulp van een homorechtenactivist gaan ze in een race tegen de klok, de strijd aan om gelijke rechten en een verandering in de wetgeving te bevechten. (September Film)

A movie full of solid acting performances with a plot that cannot be independently understood 100% due to a lack of similar experience. Having said that, the movie at least shows that a human being is an absolutely varied entity that, if they manage to find their path in life, will not leave it until they agree they have come to the end. And for this idea and the life story itself, this film definitely deserves your attention.

Ellen Page plays a lesbian. Well, she must've had to work hard for that. Julianne Moore plays a terminally ill woman, and a lesbian to boot. No offense, but that's a bit of a cliché in her case. Plus, Ellen Page looks sicker than Julianne at times. Michael Shannon shines the best in it. I consider him one of the best actors of today, who still hasn't landed a role that would truly propel him to the forefront.
