Alex Fayard, a successful crime novel author, has been invited to Japan for the release of his latest book. One night, he encounters Tamao, a geisha, who confides to him her fears. One of her former lovers, who may well be Shundei Oe, a novelist famous for his extremely violent and disturbing books, is threatening to kill her. Fayard, an Oe specialist, agrees to help her and finds himself pitted against a man who turns his trip into a bloody investigation where fiction becomes indistinguishable from reality. Engels William Friedkin has Jade, Barbet Schroeder has Inju, an attempt at a mysterious, Cronenberg-like thriller with a bit of a noir atmosphere and a shocking point. If not for the professional technical aspect, it would be closer to another mediocre straight-to-DVD adaptation of a short story by Stephen King. The only reason I didn’t guess the point of the film was because I didn’t think that such amateurish storytelling could be so ambitious. At least there were those spicy S&M scenes. ()
