Trade

Trade offers one powerful moment (the jump) and the well-captured atmosphere of the dark side of Mexico. Otherwise, however, it is bland, with a lamely overacting youth in the leading role (Cesar Ramos), a stupid climax and a clichéd postscript, in which the director dramaturgically undermines his own film. Watching Trade is like opening a birthday candy jar and discovering that someone ate all the nougats out of it, leaving only the peanut candy you're allergic to. It's very well made, Kevin Kline is surprisingly civil and believable, but all the supporting characters act like someone took their brains out of their heads and threw up in there. I think even Police Academy: Mission to Moscow doesn’t have that many morons in one film. Massive missed opportunity. Hopefully Marco Kreuzpaintner will get lucky with a better script next time. He's got a lot of talent as a director, but he can't waste it in films this stupidly written, (24.11.2007)
