The Hoax is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van schrijver Clifford Irving. Clifford (Richard Gere) is de wanhoop nabij als hij er al in geen jaren in is geslaagd om een succesvol boek te schrijven. Ten einde raad overtuigt hij zijn uitgever – en later ook zichzelf – ervan dat hij is vergekozen om de officiële biografie over Howard Hughes te schrijven. Wat begint als een uitweg voor een schrijver, die op het randje van de vergetelheid staat, eindigt in een schandaal dat uiteindelijk zelfs reikt tot aan het Witte Huis. Overmand door hebzucht en een vurig verlangen naar succes, weet Clifford de wereld te overtuigen, maar op de weg daarnaar toe verliest hij uiteindelijk meer dan hem lief is. (Independent Films)

So I'm wondering, given the addendum, why doesn't he just release it in Europe if they won't release it in the US? ;-) But whatever.... It was a cool movie, I was doing my history homework while watching it and managed both with ease, so I can't say if it's boring, as I wasn't bored for a moment /viz. D. XoD/. But I quite enjoyed the ending, when there was no homework left, and I liked how Irving so empathized with Hughes. It was really good, at least I don't have to complain about the "realistically conceived fall into the pool" as I had planned before it was explained to me... :-) Anyway, I'm sure you won't regret watching the film. Maybe you'll learn to make up bulletproof stories.
