Mongolië, 1172. Het trotse stamhoofd Esugei waagt zich aan een tocht door de winderige toendra om zijn negenjarige zoon Temudgin een bruid te helpen kiezen. Zijn keuze valt op Börte, een jong en guitig meisje. Op de terugweg wordt Esugei vergiftigd door de jaloerse krijger Targutei die ook Temudgin liever dood wil zodat hij zijn plaats als leider van de stam kan innemen. Temudgins enige uitweg is vluchten, maar hij zal des te sterker terugkeren. Zo begint er voor Temudgin een leven vol avonturen en beproevingen. Hij zal niet rusten voor hij diegene vindt die hem zal helpen om de grote Gengis Khan te worden... (Benelux Film Distributors)

Surprisingly, it has amazing visuals, it's just a shame about the very crappy script. It's not so much that it doesn't stick too closely to historical facts, but rather that it has nothing to offer. Too little plot and the often ridiculous idealization of the main character makes the film stumble pretty bad. But it's quite nice to watch.

Again a piece of history this time from Mongolia. The film beautifully captures the life of the Mongols from children to adults and the birth of their greatest warlord Genghis Khan. Filmed believably, there is surprisingly enough action and blood, the pacing is decent and on the plus side it is a revenge drama, my favourite sub-genre. 80%.

This historical film is engaging mainly thanks to the technical workmanship: the breathtaking cinematography, the nice production design and the special effects. But I found the storyline and the script rather boring and raw at times, just uninteresting. And I was a bit disappointed when the final battle was so stripped down. In short, an average film, which impresses mainly because of its audiovisual aspect.
