Robin Hardy’s briljante folk-horrorklassieker volgt de vrome christelijke politieagent Howie (Edward Woodward), die naar een afgelegen Schots eiland reist om een zaak rond een vermist meisje te onderzoeken. De heidense bewoners van het eiland blijken er bizarre rituelen op na te houden – denk vrije seks en hekserij – en trouw te zweren aan hun leider, Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee).
Zoals zoveel buitenstaanders die in een dorp aankomen, moet hij gaandeweg zijn vooroordelen over het rustige plattelandsleven bijstellen, en dat gaat niet zachtzinnig. De bewoners leiden Howie naar een van de meest angstaanjagende climaxen uit de filmgeschiedenis.
