De eigenaar van de sigarenwinkel neemt al 14 jaar lang voor zijn winkel elke dag op hetzelfde uur een foto. Een romanschrijver krijgt, sinds zijn vrouw op straat vermoord werd geen letter meer op papier. Een zwarte jongen verandert zijn naam en identiteit voor iedereen die hij ontmoet. Een man probeert zijn verleden te vergeten nadat hij de vrouw van wie hij hield verliest. Een vrouw keert na de vele jaren terug naar haar vroegere vriend en vertelt hem dat ze samen een dochter hebben en dat die nu problemen heeft. Al deze mensen lijken weinig met elkaar gemeen te hebben. Maar door een stom toeval kruisen ze elkaars paden en hebben ze een onuitwisbare invloed op elkaars leven. (Concorde Film)

Smoke is an indie chill-out conversational film with unnaturally bright interiors and some pleasant (and strange) life
stories. I was very pleased by the philosophical dimension of Harvey Keitel’s photo-project and William Hurt’s life story. But
the interaction between the young black man and his father played by Forest Whitaker seemed strange to me. And I found
Whitaker’s neurotic character almost repulsive.

A cute mosaic connecting up stories, either already told or those that take place right in front of us. Each is cloaked in smoke, but still they are heartwarming and you get to like them. It’s a joy to watch the great acting performances and clever outcomes in a movie that makes you think and reflects the period as exactly as Auggie’s camera captures time. The last, Christmas story warms the cockles of your heart. I must go visit grandma at the weekend. If you can't share your secrets with your friends then what kind of friend are you?

I love conversational films, especially when they are well-made and have something to say. This is exactly the case with the film "Smoke". The characters are wonderfully written and, most importantly, brilliantly portrayed. They stand out not because they lead such interesting lives, but simply because they know how to present their own lives well. Harvey Keitel is unbelievable when he narrates the final story. The portrayal of this memory during the closing credits is almost unnecessary because his storytelling is perfect.
