Iedere lente, wanneer de wind naar den en zee ruikt, denkt Landon terug aan zijn laatste jaar op Beaufort High en aan Jamie Sullivan, het meisje dat zijn leven heeft veranderd. Nochtans was Jamie niet het meisje waar Landon dacht verliefd op te worden. Jamie, dochter van de plaatselijke dominee, was serieus, conservatief en alles behalve eigentijds maar met een ijzersterk geloof. Landon was de populaire jongen op school die samen met zijn bende iedereen die niet aan hun standaardnormen voldeed beledigde. Echter wanneer Landon en zijn bende op een nacht een grap wilden uithalen met een jongen, liep deze serieus uit de hand en kwam de jongen in het ziekenhuis terecht. Als straf moet Landon les geven aan jonge probleemstudenten en ook meespelen in het lentetoneelstuk, dit zou hem terug met beide voeten op de grond moeten zetten. Zo leert hij Jamie kennen bij wie hij schoorvoetend om hulp gaat vragen bij deze activiteiten. Tegen zijn eigen verwachtingen in wordt Landon al heel snel verliefd op Jamie, die over een levensvreugde beschikt die hij nooit voor mogelijk hield. Maar het is niet gemakkelijk... As long as everyone is kind, honest, nice, and caring or vice versa, mean and deceitful, I grinned about the fact that it may not be meant so black and white seriously. But as soon as the main hero gives the first reasons for sympathy and Mandy Moore sings on stage, there is no doubt that I will find myself in this. A sweet and painful romance as it should be, including an exaggerated final pathos, but also sincere tearjerker moments.

A film that has heart and doesn't play games. People change and often it's the other person's fault… She gave him everything, he gave her even more… For me, one of the best American romances and (so far) the role of a lifetime for Mandy Moore. On top of that, nice music... 5 stars.

A riveting and adult film for melancholics, romantics and all those who take the phrase "true love" seriously. Brilliantly acted, brilliantly directed.

Another romance from the great Nicholas Sparks. He is the writer who is responsible for the stories behind movies like "Safe Haven" or "The Lucky One". He tries, and you will think that you are watching a real romance, where there is something more, but when you think about it with some distance in time, you will realize that he just intoxicated you with a croissant and didn't offer anything extra. Just a nice film, which looks good and where your girlfriend - and maybe even you - will cry at the end.
