Tom Baker krijgt een baan als football-coach in Chicago, waardoor hij, zijn vrouw en hun twaalf kinderen naar de grote stad moeten verhuizen. Ook Tom's vrouw krijgt het druk, omdat haar boek eindelijk gepubliceerd gaat worden. Het levert hen dan ook veel problemen op om de kinderen enigszins normaal op te voeden. (20th Century Fox)

Cheaper by the Dozen is a run-of-the-mill family comedy for the mainstream viewer. A nice house with a big white dog, a likable mom and dad, kids horsing around and, of course, the message that family is the most important thing. More important than a career. Either someone is hanging from a chandelier or spraying white foam on someone else or clumsily doing some big thing and breaking all of the glassware in the process. Apparently no effort was made to come up with something new in the script. Why should there have been when these films require a minimal budget (no effects or grand production design) and can often make more money than big-budget action flicks? At least in the case of Cheaper by the Dozen, everything is professionally shot, balanced and thankfully brisk and short.
