Eva (Charlotte De Bruyne) worstelt met menselijke connectie. Ze is vervreemd van haar ouders en nu haar jongere zus gaat verhuizen, is ze al helemaal eenzaam. Wanneer ze een bericht op social media ziet waarin de herdenking van een lang geleden overleden vriend wordt aangekondigd, brengt dat haar terug naar de zomer waarin ze dertien jaar oud was. Die zomervakantie bracht ze door als derde musketier met twee wat oudere jongens. Ze speelden een raadselspel met plaatselijke meisjes, met een schokkende afloop. Eva besluit terug te keren naar haar geboortedorp om de zomer die haar leven voor altijd veranderde achter zich te laten. Het Smelt is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige bestseller van Lize Spit. (Pathé)

A sober drama set in rural Belgium about children coming of age and teenage trauma. There are two storylines, with surprisingly the most being the flashback from childhood, which also takes more time. All in all it's more of a three star affair for me, where the final impression is improved by the ending in the barn, which won't be very pleasant for the girls, but isn't as explicit and brutal as other users mention. Anyway, a film about how children's games can result in tragedy. The acting was good, shot okay for a debut, didn't get boring, so I'll throw in a weaker four. 70%

A hard-hitting drama about growing up in the Belgian countryside. The traumatized present is mixed with the innocence of childhood memories, where all innocence slowly fades away, and once the turning points come, it becomes a really depressing watch; quite devastating in the last part. I could imagine a slightly more viable ending, but I respect the creative decision.
