In the world of Dieter Roth, art and life were inseparable. This Swiss-German was an artist to the fullest extent. He worked as a painter and graphic artist; he was a writer, a printer and a composer; he even made films. Any element of life – no matter how banal or transitory – could become art at any time. Roth even collected and catalogued each and every one of his cigarette butts. His way of living was as diverse as his art. Work, travel, teaching and apprenticeship intermingled; moments of joy and sorrow were lived to the fullest. The film wanders through Roth’s universe, following memories and traces of art on a quest for his unknown work. Interviews with Roth’s son Björn as well as his friend round off this fascinating portrait of an artist. (DOK.fest München)
