Die Insel

The two Diomede Islands, Big Diomede (Ratmanova Island) and Little Diomede (Krusenstern Island) lie in the narrowest part of the Bering Strait. The two islands are separated by 4 kilometer of water, the Russian U.S. boundary and the International Date Line. The islands’ indigenous residents are Inupiat Eskimo. Over the ages the two islands have been home to numerous trans-continental contacts of North-East Asia and North-West America. Since 1948, the only inhabitants of Ratmanova Island have been Russian border guards. (DOK.fest München)
