In 16th-century England, the corrupt King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) betrays the Roman Catholic Church to divorce his wife and marry his latest conquest Anne Boleyn (Vanessa Redgrave). Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) is then forced to choose between his principles and duty to his heretical king, who has begun executing the treasonous with increasing frequency. A very well-executed historical film in the sense that the era is superbly captured, but above all, the intrigues associated with the characters presented here are depicted excellently. Thomas More certainly had an interesting life and was born into a time that did not favor him. He wasn't exactly a man for all seasons, but then his fate wouldn't have been so interesting. Great cast! ()
One of those great historical films where there's a lot of talk, but not idle talk. The main conflict is thought-provoking even today, thanks to the perfectly honed dialogue that made it to the screen from the stage, and if you like The Lion in Winter, Beckett, or Mary, Queen of Scots, feel free.
