Samenvattingen(1)

(Gusto Entertainment)

Engels Lovers of brutal gore splatter flicks will surely enjoy the bloody, darkly humorous orgies, but all of the film’s other elements are rather weak and Terrifier 3 doesn’t work well as a whole. I will overlook the utter lack of a story, the incoherence of the narrative and the seemingly random attempts to add depth to the not very coherent mythology, because those who go to see this film won’t bother with any of that, as they will be pleased solely with the over-the-top slaughter. However, that slaughter takes up only about twenty minutes spread out over the other hundred minutes of annoying dialogue ballast in which nothing more than the main characters’ traumas and the strengthening of the sisterly bond are discussed, at length and boringly. If the purpose of that was to make the viewer sympathise and bond with the characters, it unfortunately didn’t work. Whenever the psychopathic clown Art disappears from the screen, the film basically goes off the rails. The gore passages are quite spectacular and have verve (the opening prologue even successfully builds up the tension), but subjectively speaking, nothing here surpasses the cruelty and repulsiveness of the scene in the girl’s bedroom in Terrifier 2. Engels Damien Leone is a filmmaker who has built a franchise from the bare minimum that already has a pretty decent fanbase and the three episodes have made decent chunk of change and hold a score of 7.0 on IMDB, which for splatter flick like this is a truly admirable rating. I'm curious to see how he will do with a new film outside the franchise. The third part is quite possibly the best of the series. It has a better budget and doesn't feel like an underfunded B-movie, but the story, the dialogue and the characters remain pretty lame, and when the art isn't rocking the set it's a bit boring; it's a shame there wasn't some humor or some more interesting characters outside of the murders so it wouldn’t drag so much. But when our beloved clown picks up a chainsaw, a hammer or an axe, things get pretty wild. The gore is top notch, it's properly intense to the point of being uncomfortable (the scene with the chainsaw in the shower is the peak for me) and the surprising body-count of kids LOL. Terrifier 3 definitely breaks genre taboos. I also liked his demonic sidekick Vicky, she was pretty creepy and has a nice 80's Christmas vibe. In terms of gore, it's probably the most entertaining thing to come out this year, but the rest of it unfortunately doesn't work enough to make me want to watch it again. ()

Engels Finally a clown wielding a weapon better than a red balloon? An utterly unique experience in a screening room for 1,380 people, horror fans to be precise, and with a delegation of the film's creators in attendance. But I wouldn’t give Terrifier 3 a higher rating even with knowledge of the preceding instalments. In terms of screenwriting and directing, the film is a retarded mix of Christmas splatter slasher and demonic fantasy motifs, with characters and dialogue that could have been written better by ChatGPT. In its brutality and indecency, however, it goes beyond many taboos, which is appreciated in devoted genre circles: perhaps more children than adults die in the film and Santa Clause himself meets his end in a particularly sadistic way. The scenes introducing the murderous freak have an appropriately disturbing charm, the killings are totally creative and the film has a likable 1980s visual patina. [Sitges FF] ()

Engels The return of the clown is first and foremost the return of gore, which a certain group of fans has certainly been eagerly awaiting. Compared to the second film, the story of the demonic mime has shifted a bit further into splatter comedy, bringing to mind not only Freddy, but also the serious and taciturn Michael Myers and the killer from Scream. Incidentally, the whole film is 80s through the visuals, which I applaud, and that's why we find all the basic attributes of horror films of the time, except perhaps nudity and sex, which were very sparingly handled. The work with the chainsaw work was a bright exception, and there was the added bonus of guts coming out in all their glory. The window in the attic is a reminder of The Amityville Horror, the knock on the door a reminder of The Shining, and two scenes feature music all too similar to Carpenter's from Halloween. On the one hand, I liked that the foundation is a solid story, but on the other hand, if it weren't for the murders, this would be a very bland affair. The hatchet and the saw certainly did their job... ()
